Accent Color Support for GNOME is Being Worked On

I have good news for anyone who wishes they could change the background hue used in GNOME Shell.

The effort to correctly and formally integrate accent color support in GNOME has advanced. There is currently A new merge request open that adds 10 accent hues without the use of any strange theme hacks or workaround addons.

I’m sure I’m not the only one who wishes there were more methods to customize their GNOME experience. The default “blue” color of GNOME (or is it Adwaita?) is acceptable most of the time, but sometimes, you know, it just doesn’t fit my attitude.

The most efficient way to accomplish this is to let users customize the hue of icons, toggles, and switches in GNOME Shell, core applications, and potentially GTK4/libadwaita applications. This is demonstrated in some early snapshots of the feature in use.

But this is all still in development.

Nobody should get overly enthusiastic too quickly, not even me. Developers are working diligently to make this all a reality, but as the supporting mechanisms begin to come together, there will undoubtedly be technical issues and interface issues to address.

However, as a self-professed lover of customization, this is something I’ll be paying close attention to, particularly as development on GNOME 45, which is scheduled to be released in the fall, gets under way.
