Business, industry, and developers with special requirements will be pleased to learn that Ubuntu’s real-time kernel is now generally available.
Real-time Ubuntu is “built for organisations in aerospace, automotive, military, IoT, robots, and telecoms, as well as the public sector and retail,” according to Canonical, where access to flexible, low-latency computing provided by a deterministic real-time kernel is a real-time necessity.

The real-time kernel in Ubuntu 22.04 LTS is based on the Linux 5.15 LTS kernel and is available for both x86 and Arm platforms. According to Canonical, the Real-time Ubuntu kernel incorporates out-of-tree PREEMPT RT modifications to minimise kernel latencies, making it’more preemptive’ than mainstream Linux kernels.
“The real-time Ubuntu kernel enables industrial-grade performance and robustness for software-defined manufacturing, monitoring, and operational technology,” adds Mark Shuttleworth, the company’s creator.
“Ubuntu is currently the world’s finest silicon-optimized AIOT platform on NVIDIA, Intel, MediaTek, and AMD-Xilinx silicon,” he continues.
So, how do businesses obtain real-time Ubuntu 22.04 LTS?
It’s accessed through an Ubuntu Pro membership, and it’s available on most Ubuntu variations. It should also be noted that the real-time kernel cannot be used in conjunction with Livepatch, Canonical’s reboot-free kernel update functionality, and it is incompatible with computers that have proprietary NVIDIA graphics installed.
Real-time Ubuntu works best with Ubuntu Server 22.04 LTS or Ubuntu Core 22 installations.
