The New Look of Google Documents Matches Gmail’s

Google regularly updates its collection of online work tools, which also includes Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive. Soon, those services will have a new look to go along with the most recent Gmail upgrade.

You’ll observe a new look and feel for Google Drive, Docs, Sheets, and Slides on the web in the upcoming weeks, Google stated on its site. The updated user interface, which follows the introduction of Google Material Design 3, was specifically created to streamline key cooperation trips across our products.

The updated company applications for Android smartphones and devices and the current Gmail design all feature the new design. You won’t need to learn how to create a document or modify PowerPoint slides again because most of the icons and options are in the same location, but some features have been moved. According to Google, a new clock icon has been added to the top-right area of the document that now displays the current document state, including the last update and version history.

The UI has been given a major aesthetic makeover with more rounded edges and padding. In order to more closely resemble the Microsoft Office update for Windows that began trickling out in 2021, the toolbar on Docs, Sheets, and Slides is now in a rounded frame below the navigation bar.

However, in addition to the look, there are a few new functions. There are now inline buttons on some files in Google Drive for faster access, multi-select has been enhanced, and there are new search chips that let you sort by file category, file user, and last changed dates. You can now design your own Docs, Sheets, and Slides construction components that can be used as templates for goals, projects, and other work. Variables now have new support, enabling you to put placeholders inside of a document and fill them out from a central interface.

With this upgrade, third-party tools like Atlassian and Zendesk will have the ability to build new “chips,” which Google has lately been adding to its online applications. An inline link with the title automatically inserted, for instance, could result from copying a link from a supported service into a document. When the cursor is moved over the link, more information might display.

Google claims that the new look began to spread out on March 6, 2023, but some accounts won’t see it until around March 22.
